Cozy Reading Nook Ideas

Picture this: you’re curled up on a comfortable chair, sofa, or bed, a blanket draped over your lap and a good book in your hands. You’re cozy, relaxed, and ready to escape into another world.  This is what a reading nook is all about, plus it’s a great place to spend some time to decompress after a hectic day.

It doesn’t matter if your space is big or small – what matters is that it makes you happy and relaxed when you’re in there.  Plus, it’s great to have one main spot where you can always go back to whenever you’re looking forward to having some reading time.  So, I’ll share five tips on how to create a cozy reading nook!

But first, What is a reading nook?

A reading nook is a dedicated space within a home designed specifically for the comfortable and enjoyable experience of reading. It’s a personal retreat, often tucked away in a quiet corner or underutilized area of a residence, outfitted with a comfortable chair or seating arrangement and suitable lighting. This cozy area is a reader’s sanctuary, where one can unwind with a book free from the distractions of daily life. The reading nook is enhanced with personal touches such as soft pillows, blankets, and the reader’s choice of books within arm’s reach, making it an inviting spot to delve into stories and knowledge for hours on end.

What is a book nook?

A book nook is a charming addition to any bibliophile’s space, often designed not just for reading but also for showcasing a collection of books. Differing from a reading nook, which focuses on comfort and seclusion for the act of reading, a book nook serves dual purposes. It provides a visually appealing display that highlights one’s literary treasures, often incorporating creative shelving and artistic elements. While a reading nook is primarily about creating a personal hideaway for the reader, a book nook may occupy a more prominent position in a room, inviting conversation and admiration for the curated selection of titles on display.

What goes in a reading nook?

When creating a reading nook, you’ll want to consider furniture such as chairs and tables. You’ll also need book storage solutions like bookshelves or vertical wall-mounted options. Other items include blankets and pillows for comfort, plants for an inviting atmosphere, and accessories such as candles or rugs to add texture. Finally, make sure you have access to power outlets and multiple layers of lighting. With these items, you can create a cozy reading nook that will be perfect for relaxing with your favorite book!

5 Tips to Create a Cozy Reading Nook

1. Decide what cozy reading spot works best for you in your home.

Your cozy reading spot can be an unused corner in your bedroom, living room, a spot near or under your staircase, or even a spot in a hallway. Before deciding on the spot for your reading nook, sit in it and assess how you feel in the space. Will it be quiet, are you cramped, will you be interrupted here a lot, can you make it cozy and comfortable?

2. Find the right chair for your reading nook.

When selecting a chair, you should prioritize comfort over everything else. As for style, find a chair that’s similar to your existing home decor and the furnishings in that area. You can also shop your home and consider using an existing chair. If you have a favorite chair that’s aged or you just don’t like the look anymore, you can also consider re-upholstering.

Alternatives to chairs include but are not limited to recliners, a chaise lounge, a sofa, a bean bag, or even a hammock.

3. Consider lighting options for your reading nook.

A reading space with natural light is best in an ideal world, but the proper lighting can create the cozy feel your reading nook needs. When selecting lighting options, you should prioritize dimmable lights and lights with settings so you can adjust your light depending on the time of day and your needs.

4. Create a space for books to live in your reading nook.

There are several options for book storage that you can use in your reading nook. You can go traditional and use a bookcase. Alternatively, you could also stack crates, opt for vertical storage options mounted to the wall, a table, or even stacking them on your floor!

A side table can also work as a place where you can stack books below and have space on top to place your beverages and snacks.

5. Decorate your reading nook to fit your personality.

Cozy blankets, soft pillows, or throw pillows are great staple options for decorating. When selecting throw pillows for your cozy reading nook, it is best to pick ones with textures like velvet, faux fur, suede, etc., because these materials will produce an overall “cozy” effect in your space. Likewise, selecting cushions with exciting patterns is excellent as they stand out against the solid color of your other decor items within your space.

Don’t forget to step back and assess as you start adding things to your space. If anything else would make this space even cozier, add it, and subtract it if it’s too much.

Bonus Tip: And, of course, the extras.

This includes but is not limited to plush rugs, candles, plants, pictures, figures, or anything sentimental.

How do you make an adult reading nook?

Creating an adult reading nook involves curating a space that is both sophisticated and conducive to uninterrupted reading. Begin by choosing a location in your home that is relatively quiet and secluded, away from the main flow of activity. Select a comfortable, ergonomically designed chair that offers good support for extended periods of sitting. Ambient, task, and accent lighting are essential – consider a mix of floor lamps and table lamps with adjustable brightness. For storing books, you might select a sleek bookshelf or elegant floating shelves that complement the room’s decor. Incorporate mature decorative touches like a minimalist rug, a modern art piece, or a stylish vase. For added comfort, include a soft throw and a high-quality lumbar pillow. Keep the color palette neutral or select colors that inspire tranquility and focus. Lastly, ensure your reading nook has a small table or surface for beverages, reading glasses, and other essentials, maintaining both functionality and a grown-up aesthetic.

How do you make a reading nook in a small bedroom?

To create a reading nook in a small bedroom, you need to work with the space you have while maximizing comfort and functionality. Start by identifying a corner or alcove where you can place a small, comfortable chair that doesn’t overwhelm the room. Opt for wall-mounted shelves to save floor space while keeping your books within easy reach. Use a clip-on reading light or a small floor lamp to provide sufficient lighting without taking up much space. Consider a foldable side table for your coffee or tea, which can be tucked away when not in use. Accessories like a plush throw and a soft pillow can add comfort and warmth to the nook. Mirrors can also be strategically placed to reflect light and give the illusion of more space. Keep the color scheme light and airy to enhance the sense of openness in the nook. With these elements, even the smallest bedroom can offer a cozy and inviting spot for reading and relaxation.

How do you make a simple reading nook?

Creating a simple reading nook is an exercise in minimalism and functionality. Start with a comfortable seating option, like a beanbag chair, floor cushion, or a small armchair that doesn’t occupy too much space. Incorporate a simple shelving solution or a stack of books arranged neatly to one side to act as a makeshift bookend or nightstand. For lighting, a clip-on lamp or an adjustable desk lamp can provide focused illumination without the clutter. To personalize the space, add a single cushion for extra comfort and a textured mat or rug beneath your seat. Keep decorations to a minimum, perhaps with one or two favorite photos or a small potted plant. The key is to create a cozy corner that feels private and tranquil, dedicated exclusively to the pleasure of reading.

How to make a cheap reading nook?

Creating a reading nook doesn’t have to be expensive.  Start by picking out a cozy spot in your home or apartment that has enough space for you to relax and enjoy.  Look for furniture items that are on sale, used, or DIY projects like armchairs and tables.  You can also find book storage solutions at thrift stores or online.  When decorating, look for affordable items like blankets and pillows from places like IKEA or Target, or use plants that you already have in your home.  Finally, make sure to accessorize with items you find around the house such as candles and rugs.  With these tips, you can create an inexpensive yet cozy reading nook that will be perfect for reading!
