The Romance Books I Cannot Stop Thinking About This Summer

Hi Besties, I genuinely think Summer 2026 is a great romance reading seasons for readers to look forward to. These romance books gave me yearning, chemistry, emotional damage, beach town tension, quiet intimacy, ridiculous fake dating setups, messy second chances, softness, chaos, and people falling in love while trying very hard not to. And honestly, that is exactly what I want from summer romance reading. What I loved most about The 2026 Summer Reading Guide lineup is that the books do not all feel the same. Some are deeply emotional and aching. Some are funny and cozy. Some are wildly romantic in that “I need to stare at the wall after finishing” kind of way. There are contemporary romances, historical romances, paranormal romances, road trip romances, and stories that blur the line between romance and women’s fiction beautifully. These are books I read and loved and immediately started recommending to people. So if you are building your summer reading TBR and want romance books that actually deliver emotionally, these are the ones I would start with.

Best New Romance Books for Summer 2026

Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune book cover

Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune

This book absolutely wrecked me emotionally in the best way. If you love best friends to lovers stories where every interaction feels loaded with years of history and buried feelings, this one delivers completely. Frankie and George have that impossible chemistry where you are simultaneously rooting for them and terrified for them. The coastal setting feels dreamy and intimate, but the emotional tension is what really carried this story for me. This is one of those romances where the longing feels almost unbearable.

Love Beyond Reasonable Doubt by Swati Hegde

This was such a fun and satisfying summer romance. I loved the mix of legal drama, second chance romance, and vibrant Indian settings woven throughout the story. Naina and Tejas have fantastic opposites attract energy, and their shared history gives the romance real emotional depth underneath all the chemistry. This is the kind of book I would happily read poolside in one sitting.

Score by Kennedy Ryan

Kennedy Ryan truly does not miss with this one. This romance is emotional, layered, deeply human, and painfully romantic in the way only she can write. Verity and Monk’s story spans years of heartbreak, longing, and unfinished love, and every scene between them feels electric. I especially loved how thoughtfully mental health, identity, creativity, and ambition were handled throughout the story. This was one of my standout romances of the entire year.

Double Happiness by Heather Eng

This one feels quieter and more reflective than some of the other romances on this list, but I actually appreciated that about it. It explores burnout, work culture, ambition, and the complicated choices people make when trying to build a meaningful life. I especially loved the New York atmosphere and the conversations around redefining success and happiness. It leans more character-driven and introspective, which worked really well for my mood lately.

Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan

I loved this book so much. It has fake dating, emotional vulnerability, family responsibilities, and one of the warmest heroines I have read in a long time. Dolly feels incredibly real. She is exhausted, caring for everyone around her, and quietly carrying too much, which made her romance with Stewart feel even more satisfying. This story radiates tenderness without losing its humor or charm.

The Summer Girlfriend by Kristina Forest

This is exactly the kind of summery fake dating romance I crave during warmer months. Beach town setting, family drama, chemistry that slowly sneaks up on both characters, and a relationship that starts as a performance before becoming something real. I loved how emotionally grounded this story felt underneath the lighter setup. It has warmth, vulnerability, and that addictive “just one more chapter” energy.

The Missed Connection by Tia Williams

Tia Williams writes messy, complicated, magnetic people better than almost anyone. This romance starts with a missed connection on a flight and somehow turns into a layered story about trauma, healing, attraction, and human connection. Sasha and Wes both feel incredibly flawed and real, which made their chemistry even stronger for me. I flew through this book.

Chase Me If You Can by Heather Frances

Storm chasing romance? Immediate yes from me. This book feels cinematic in the best way possible. The tension between Sloane and Wes is fantastic, but I also loved the atmosphere of constantly chasing dangerous weather across huge open landscapes. It feels adventurous and romantic while still giving both characters emotional depth and vulnerability.

Scandal of the Summer by Alexandra Vasti

This was pure fun for me. Fake identities, smugglers, Regency chaos, yearning, humor, and a gorgeous summer setting all wrapped into one wildly entertaining historical romance. Ruby and Malcolm have fantastic chemistry, but what I really loved was the found family energy surrounding them. This book feels playful while still delivering real emotional payoff.

Every Version of You by Natalie Messier

This was one of the most emotionally ambitious romances I read this year. It blends second chances, existential questions, regret, fate, and romance in a way that somehow feels both emotional and entertaining. Joey’s journey hit me surprisingly hard because it is not just about romance. It is about wondering if you built the wrong life entirely and whether you can still choose differently.

The Roommate Rule by Georgia Stone

This is such an easy recommendation for fans of opposites attract summer romance. Dylan and Max are forced into close quarters during a trip to Wales, and their chemistry develops in such a believable, satisfying way. The setting is gorgeous, the romance is sweet and sexy, and the emotional themes around fear, uncertainty, and learning how to loosen control felt very relatable.

Most Ardently Yours by Freya Sampson

This book was made specifically for romance readers who grew up obsessed with Mr. Darcy. It is funny, whimsical, romantic, and completely charming. Watching Darcy attempt to navigate modern life had me laughing constantly, but underneath the humor is a genuinely thoughtful story about fantasy versus reality and what love actually looks like in everyday life.

Die for Me by Shirlene Obuobi

This book is sexy in a deeply dangerous, addictive kind of way. I loved seeing paranormal romance approached through an older heroine who already feels established in her career and life. Sean and Julian’s chemistry is intense from the beginning, and the supernatural elements make the romance feel obsessive and emotionally consuming in the best way. I absolutely devoured this.

Just a Highland Fling by Naina Kumar

Just a Highland Fling by Naina Kumar

This romance surprised me emotionally because underneath the fun road trip setup is a story about grief, family, identity, and healing old wounds. The Scotland setting is gorgeous and atmospheric, but the emotional growth between Neelu and Jacob is what stayed with me. This felt softer and more reflective than I expected in a really lovely way.

Pride Comes Before a Fall by Virginia Heath

Pride Comes Before a Fall by Virginia Heath

I loved how sharp and politically charged this Regency romance felt. Portia is stubborn, idealistic, intelligent, and completely unwilling to compromise her principles, which made her dynamic with Leo incredibly entertaining. Their slow burn romance feels passionate and emotionally earned, and the historical details around reform movements gave the story real weight beyond the romance itself.

How to Use This Romance List in Your Summer Reading Guide 2026

If you are building your own Summer Reading Guide 2026, here is how I would mix these romance books into your reading life:

  • Choose one deeply emotional romance like Score or Our Perfect Storm
  • Add one lighter beachy romance like The Summer Girlfriend or The Roommate Rule
  • Include one whimsical or unusual romance like Most Ardently Yours or Dearly Departed
  • Pick one historical romance for summer drama and yearning like Scandal of the Summer or Pride Comes Before a Fall

Then balance everything out with your thrillers, cozy fantasies, literary fiction, and family stories from the rest of your summer reading list. Honestly, this is one of those romance seasons where there really is something for every mood.

Final Thoughts

I think what I loved most about these romance books is that they all understand something important about love stories. The best romances are never just about attraction. They are about timing. Vulnerability. Grief. Fear. Friendship. Identity. Hope. The version of yourself you become when someone finally sees you clearly. And this summer’s romance lineup feels full of stories that understand that. Some made me laugh. Some made me emotional. Some made me immediately text people. Some made me stare at the ceiling afterward thinking about life choices. Which honestly is exactly what I want from romance reading. Now tell me everything. Have you read any of these yet? Which ones are going straight onto your Summer 2026 TBR?
