The 2023 Summer Reading Challenge for Adults

Make Summer Magical with the 2023 Summer Reading Challenge

Hi Bookish Besties! There’s just something about summer that begs for a stack of books. Maybe it’s the longer days, the sound of the waves, or the excuse to sit outside with a drink and just read. That’s why I created the Summer Reading Challenge 2023—a fun and flexible way to add structure to your summer TBR while still leaving room for plenty of mood reading.

This year’s reading challenge theme is “Read S’more This Summer,” because honestly, nothing goes better with sunshine and late nights than a good story (and maybe a gooey s’more or two).

What Is the Summer Reading Challenge 2023?

The 2023 summer reading challenge is all about keeping reading fun, intentional, and seasonally inspired. With five prompts to guide you, you’ll explore new genres, revisit old favorites, and maybe even discover your next five-star read.

It’s perfect if you:

  • Want a little inspiration for your summer TBR.
  • Are hoping to read outside your comfort zone.
  • Need a low-pressure way to stay motivated.

How the Summer Reading Challenge Works

The challenge runs from June 1, 2023 to August 31, 2023. Here’s how to join in:

  1. Choose a book for each of the five prompts.
  2. Read at your own pace through June, July, and August.
  3. Share your progress with the hashtag #BiblioLifestyleChallenge—I love seeing your picks!
  4. Download and share the official challenge graphic to invite your friends to read along.

And if you’re an eager reader? Feel free to double (or triple) up and turn this into a 10- or 15-book challenge.

Summer Reading Challenge 2023 Prompts

Here’s what you’ll be reading this summer:

1. A Book Set in Summer

Pick a story that lives and breathes the season—think beach towns, family reunions, or long, hot afternoons. These reads always make me feel like I’m inside my own summer vacation.

2. A Debut Novel

Nothing feels fresher than discovering a new voice in fiction. I love debut novels for their boldness and originality—they often surprise me in the best way.

3. A Book Set in a Destination You’d Love to Visit

Your summer travel plans might be modest, but books are the ultimate passport. This prompt always leaves me feeling like I’ve just returned from a trip.

4. A Popular “Buzzy” Book

There’s usually at least one book everyone seems to be talking about each summer. Joining the conversation is fun—and sometimes, the hype really is worth it.

5. A Book From a Genre You Rarely Explore

This is my favorite prompt because it pushes me out of my comfort zone. Every time I take a chance on a new genre, I either learn something new about myself as a reader or find a hidden gem I would have missed.

Why Join the Summer Reading Challenge?

Here’s what I love about seasonal challenges like this:

  • They make reading intentional—you’ll finish summer feeling like you spent it well.
  • They add variety—goodbye reading slumps!
  • They encourage connection—when we share our picks, we inspire each other.
  • They build memories—I can still remember what books I read each summer and where I was while reading them.

How to Get Started

  • Build your list: Grab a notebook or app and jot down titles for each prompt.
  • Set the mood: Make your reading nook summer-ready with iced drinks, candles, or even a cozy hammock.
  • Invite a friend: Reading challenges are even more fun when shared.

Final Thoughts

The Summer Reading Challenge 2023 is your excuse to slow down, enjoy the season, and let books become part of your best summer memories. Whether you stick to five books or decide to tackle fifteen, the goal is simple: to read s’more and enjoy the journey.

So—what’s on your summer reading list this year? Are you leaning toward beach reads, thrillers, or maybe that classic you’ve been putting off? Share your picks in the comments—I’d love to hear what you’re diving into!
