A Friendly Guide to Reading Challenges

Hi Bookish Besties! If you’ve been hanging around here for a while, you know I’m a huge fan of reading challenges. They’re one of my favorite ways to stay motivated, make space for more books, and stretch myself into genres or authors I wouldn’t normally pick up. Over the years, challenges have helped me read more consistently and—most importantly—enjoy my reading life more fully.

But maybe you’re wondering: What exactly are reading challenges, and how do I find the right one for me? Let’s dive into everything you need to know, plus some personal tips I’ve learned along the way.

What Are Reading Challenges?

At their core, reading challenges are structured goals designed to keep you engaged and intentional with your reading. They might ask you to read a certain number of books, tackle prompts tied to themes, or explore new genres.

Why join one? Here are a few reasons that keep me coming back year after year:

  • They help you build or maintain a reading habit.
  • You’ll discover new authors and genres you might have overlooked.
  • Challenges can be social or solo—do them with a group online or at your own pace.
  • They make reading feel more intentional and fun (instead of another to-do on your list).

Types of Reading Challenges

Not all reading challenges look the same, and that’s the beauty of them. Here are a few popular styles I’ve tried (and loved):

  • Genre-Based Challenges – A year of classics, mysteries, sci-fi, or romance. Perfect if you want to go deep in one area.
  • Seasonal Challenges – A cozy fall challenge, a lighthearted summer one—these make reading feel in sync with the seasons.
  • Quantity Challenges – Set a number goal (12 books in a year, 50 books, 100 books—whatever fits your lifestyle).
  • Thematic Challenges – Prompts tied to ideas like travel, transformation, or social justice. These are great for sparking deeper reflection.

I’ve done all of the above at different times, and each has stretched me in unique ways.

How to Choose the Right Reading Challenge

Finding the perfect challenge really comes down to knowing your reading style. Ask yourself:

  • Do I prefer fiction or nonfiction?
  • How much time do I realistically have to read each week?
  • Do I want a short seasonal challenge or a year-long one?

If you’re not sure, I recommend starting small. Three prompts for fall or five for summer can be just as rewarding as a year-long challenge.

Setting and Tracking Your Reading Goals

Once you’ve picked a challenge, you’ll want to set yourself up for success. Here are a few strategies that have worked for me:

  • Decide how many books you want to read. Be realistic!
  • Pick genres that excite you. A challenge should feel motivating, not like homework.
  • Carve out weekly reading time. For me, that’s early mornings with tea and weekends curled up on the couch.

And don’t forget tracking tools! I love using a reading journal for jotting notes, plus apps like Goodreads or StoryGraph for keeping a digital record.

Tips for Sticking With Your Challenge

  • Set realistic goals. If you’re new to challenges, don’t start with 52 books in a year.
  • Join a group. Reading alongside others makes the journey fun (and helps with accountability).
  • Stay flexible. If a book isn’t working for you, swap it out. The point is to enjoy yourself.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Reading Challenges

Every time I finish a challenge, I look back and see growth—not just in the number of books I’ve read, but in the way those books have shaped me.

Personally, challenges have helped me:

  • Stick to a consistent reading habit.
  • Discover gems I never would have chosen otherwise.
  • Gain fresh perspectives and learn something new.
  • Make reading an even more joyful, meaningful part of my life.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve never tried a reading challenge, I can’t recommend it enough. Start small, pick prompts that excite you, and let the process guide you toward new discoveries. Tell me in the comments: Have you ever joined a reading challenge? Do you prefer seasonal, annual, or genre-basedones? I’d love to hear about your experiences—and maybe even inspire your next challenge.

Here’s to making our reading lives richer, one challenge at a time.
