3 Reading Rituals That Changed My Weekend Vibe

Hi Bookish Besties, Weekends used to fly by in a blur of errands and to-do lists—until I carved out three simple reading rituals that transformed my Saturday and Sunday into mini staycations. These slow, intentional routines helped me fall in love with reading all over again and reminded me why books are the perfect weekend companions. Let me walk you through each ritual in my reading life, share what I pair it with, and offer specific recommendations so you can try them too.

My 3 Reading Rituals

Sunrise Pages & Tea Sips

Starting your day with 15–20 minutes of quiet reading, before notifications and to‑dos kick in, sets a calm tone for hours to come. Pairing it with your favorite warm drink makes it feel like a gentle ceremony.

How I Do It:

  • Time:  6–7 AM on Saturday and Sunday
  • Setup:  I light a candle, brew a pot of herbal tea, and settle into the couch, open the blinds and get my blanket draped over my knees.
  • Book Pick:  Personally, in the mornings I’m not looking for fast paced reads unless I’m finishing something from the night before. I gravitate towards character driven, story collections, essay collections or poetry.
  • Tip: If possible, wake up before everyone else, do not check your phone first, leave it on Sleep or Do Not Disturb.

Midday Walk & Pages

Breaking up the day with a walk brings fresh air and energy—and by tucking a paperback or Kindle into your bag, you can turn a quick stroll into a portable book break.

How I Do It:

  • Time:  Around 11 AM, 11:30 AM thereabouts, before lunch
  • Setup: I choose a route through my neighborhood park, pack a bottle of water, and bring whichever book I’m devouring.
  • Book Pick: Opt for plot-driven novels if you’re starting something new, or books with short chapters. Tell Me What You Did by Carter Wilson has been my go‑to for its gripping cat‑and‑mouse suspense—perfect for fragmented chapters on a park bench.
  • Tip: If you’re worried about page‑turning outdoors, use a small clipboard or book stand to keep the breeze at bay.

Candlelit Evening & Reflection

Winding down under soft lamplight or candle glow—and jotting your thoughts about what you read—helps you process the story and transition into a restful evening.

How I Do It:

  • Time:  After supper, around 8 PM
  • Setup:  I dim the overhead lights, light another candle, and pour a small glass of wine or chamomile tea depending on the mood.
  • Book Pick:  I revisit whatever I’ve been reading throughout the day, or start something new on my TBR.
  • Tip: Keep a simple reading journal by your side. After each session or at the end of the day, write one sentence about what moved you most—a character insight, a vivid scene, or an emotion you felt.

Final Thoughts

By weaving these three rituals—sunrise pages, a midday walking book break, and candlelit reflection—into my weekends, I’ve rediscovered reading as a source of calm and joy. Give them a try, tweak them to fit your schedule, and let me know how your weekend vibe shifts.

Happy reading—and here’s to weekends full of books, calm, and discovery!
