The Baker Street Mystery Series by Valerie Burns: Cozy Crimes, Cakes, and Second Chances
The Baker Street Mystery Series by Valerie Burns blends small-town charm, baking, and murder. Here’s what to expect from each book!

Baking, Friendship, and a Dash of Murder: Inside Valerie Burns’s Baker Street Mystery Series
If you love cozy mysteries with a side of buttercream and a cast of lovable small-town characters, The Baker Street Mystery Series by Valerie Burns is one you’ll want to devour-preferably with a slice of cake nearby.
At the heart of the series is Maddie Montgomery, a social media influencer whose perfectly curated life unravels in spectacular fashion when she’s left at the altar during a livestreamed wedding. What follows is the kind of story I live for-reinvention, community, and just enough mystery to keep the pages turning long past bedtime.
Set in New Bison, Michigan, this series has all the ingredients of a perfect cozy: a charming lakeside town, a circle of hilarious aunties, a loyal (and massive) English Mastiff named Baby, and plenty of twists served with warmth and humor.

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder
The series kicks off with a bang-and a broken heart. After Maddie is jilted at her lavish social-media wedding, she inherits her late aunt’s bakery and mastiff in small-town Michigan. Completely out of her depth, Maddie swaps hashtags for homemade pastries and quickly learns that life offline can be just as complicated-especially when the town’s mayor is found dead and she becomes suspect number one.
Watching Maddie go from influencer to amateur sleuth was such a delight. She’s messy, funny, and determined, the kind of character you root for even when her cupcakes collapse. The friendships she builds with her aunt’s friends-the self-appointed “Baker Street Irregulars”-bring so much heart and humor to the story.
If you love small-town cozies like Hannah Swensen or Cupcake Bakery Mysteries, this one will charm you instantly. It’s funny, heartfelt, and sprinkled with second-chance energy that made me want to move to New Bison immediately.

Murder Is a Piece of Cake
In the second book, Maddie is finding her rhythm as both baker and sleuth. Her bakery, Baby Cakes, is gaining a following, and she’s learning to balance frosting and friendship. But when a rival baker turns up dead-with one of Maddie’s branded knives at the scene-she’s suddenly back under suspicion.
What I loved most here was how Maddie steps more confidently into her new life. She’s no longer the influencer who ran from chaos-she’s standing in her kitchen, sleeves rolled up, ready to face it. Between prepping for the Spring Festival and untangling small-town gossip, Maddie’s growth shines through.
This book had me smiling the whole way through. It’s for readers who love GBBO vibes with a side of whodunit-equal parts sugar and spice.

A Cup of Flour, A Pinch of Death
By the third book, Maddie has fully embraced her role as New Bison’s unofficial detective. Her bakery is thriving, her friendships are stronger than ever, and her life feels, well, good-until her old nemesis turns up dead in the bakery.
As the body count rises and old family secrets resurface, Maddie’s confidence is tested in ways she didn’t expect. I adored how Valerie Burns balances humor and heartache here; Maddie’s voice feels so real. You see her wrestling with guilt, loyalty, and the realization that sometimes success doesn’t mean escaping your past-it means understanding it.
This installment deepens the emotional thread running through the series while keeping the pace brisk and the dialogue witty. I found myself tearing up one minute and laughing the next.

Icing on the Murder
In book four, Icing on the Murder, Maddy’s life finally feels picture-perfect-Baby Cakes Bakery is a hit, she’s engaged to the local veterinarian, and she’s planning her dream wedding. The cherry on top? She’s secured a booth at the country’s biggest bridal expo, where she’s also entered a contest to win an all-expenses-paid wedding planned by the legendary (and infamously nasty) Serafina.
But when Serafina turns up dead-impaled by one of Baby Cakes’ cake skewers-Maddy’s special day takes a sharp turn. With her Maid of Honor (who happens to be the local sheriff) leading the official investigation, Maddy joins forces once again with her loyal Baker Street Irregulars and her lovable mastiff Baby to solve the case before her wedding bells turn into alarm bells.
This one is pure cozy delight from start to finish. I loved the wedding theme, the over-the-top bridal expo setting, and the way Maddy’s personal life and sleuthing collide. It’s a joyful, funny, fast-paced mystery that proves sometimes the path to “happily ever after” comes with a few unexpected crumbs.

Why I Love This Series (and Think You Will Too)
The Baker Street Mystery Series is cozy mystery perfection. Valerie Burns writes with humor, warmth, and heart-she gives us a heroine who feels real and relatable, with flaws and insecurities that make her all the more endearing.

What I love most, though, is the sense of community. The Baker Street Irregulars (Aunt Octavia’s friends) are a hoot, the small-town gossip is pitch-perfect, and Baby the mastiff might just be my favorite fictional dog of all time. These books celebrate resilience, friendship, and the beauty of starting over-one bake (and one mystery) at a time.
If you love cozy mysteries where food, friendship, and second chances shine, you’ll want to add every book in this series to your TBR.
